Today, we sat down with Steve Grant, a true Palm Harbor local. Growing up in Palm Harbor, Florida, Steve, along with his brother and childhood friend, is building Guardian Home. Their journey, though not always as planned, has been a remarkable adventure. In this episode, Steve shares his experiences of working with a clothing business, the evolution of solar roof panels, and balancing business ownership with family life.

From Finance to Construction

Steve’s career began in finance, working with financial planning firms while still in college. He had a clear vision of a future in the stock market. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he started working for a women’s clothing company in Miami, an industry he knew nothing about. This company, much like a family business, grew significantly, and Steve climbed the ranks to become VP of Sales, managing sales across America and even dealing with international distributors.

Despite his success, the operational challenges of the clothing business intrigued him more than sales. The company’s need to ramp up production led Steve to dive into operations, eventually becoming the COO. This role required him to oversee everything from dispatch to production, a comprehensive learning experience that would later prove invaluable.

After traveling extensively and living in different places, Steve and his wife decided that Palm Harbor was the best place to raise their family. Looking for new ventures, he saw potential in solar energy and medical marijuana, ultimately choosing solar. Steve joined a solar business, helping it grow into a $65 million company. This experience, combined with his finance background, equipped him with the skills and knowledge to start his own business.

Starting Guardian Home

In 2022, Steve, his brother, and their lifelong friend decided to start Guardian Home, a company specializing in solar energy, roofing, and HVAC systems. They began with just three people, similar to the business Steve had previously worked at. This small beginning allowed them to handle every job, from sales to installation, gaining a deep understanding of the business.

Their shared dream of owning a business together came to fruition through hard work and determination. Steve’s finance background played a crucial role in managing the company’s growth. He stepped into various roles as needed, including CFO, leveraging his knowledge and consulting support to ensure the business’s financial health.

Embracing Challenges

Starting and growing a business is filled with obstacles. Steve believes that embracing these challenges is essential for success. Drawing inspiration from his Navy SEAL friend, who emphasized never giving up, Steve has adopted a resilient mindset. He views obstacles as integral to the journey, making the achievements that follow even more rewarding.

Steve’s passion for learning and facing challenges is rooted in his upbringing and personal interests. His father and grandfather instilled in him a love for learning and resilience. Activities like martial arts and yoga have further developed his discipline and ability to handle challenges, skills that are invaluable in the business world.

The Solar Industry

Steve entered the solar industry in 2022, recognizing its potential despite it being relatively new in Florida. The industry has evolved significantly over the past seven years, with advances in technology and a better understanding among consumers. Government incentives like the 30% tax credit make solar energy financially attractive for homeowners, especially those planning to stay in their homes for several years.

Solar panels have become more efficient and aesthetically pleasing, with black-on-black panels now available. Guardian Home also offers battery backups and generators, providing reliable power solutions during outages. Steve envisions the future of solar evolving into even more efficient and cost-effective technologies, possibly moving towards film-based solutions.

Growing Guardian Home

Guardian Home has expanded its services to include roofing and HVAC systems, partnering with established companies to fulfill these needs initially. Their goal is to bring these services in-house as they grow. Maintaining a 30% annual growth rate ensures they provide the best customer experience without overextending their resources.

Steve emphasizes the importance of communication and customer service in growing a service-based business. Treating customers well and maintaining transparency sets a business apart. Having a strong support network and incentivizing good people to drive the business forward are also crucial.

Balancing Business and Family

Balancing business and family life is a priority for Steve. He emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and being present for both business and family. Steve prioritizes family dinners and disconnects from work during family time. This approach helps him manage his time effectively, ensuring he can respond to clients promptly while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Steve’s journey with Guardian Home exemplifies the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and strong support networks in building a successful business. By embracing challenges and prioritizing customer service, Guardian Home continues to thrive in the evolving solar industry. Steve’s story is a testament to the power of determination, teamwork, and the willingness to learn and adapt in the face of challenges.
